Billionaire Bollore Takes Empire Back to Brittany With Batteries
“We come from Brittany, the land of people who aren’t
afraid”
French billionaire Vincent Bollore is used to getting kudos from investors and analysts. Now he’s got France’s president angling to share that spotlight.
With French unemployment at a 14-year high, Bollore’s move to expand production and add jobs at his electric-car battery factory near Quimper, Brittany, earned him a visit from President Francois Hollande, who travels to France’s western-most province today to speak at the site’s inauguration.
Blue Solutions, headed for an initial public offering in 40 days, is one of the latest developments Bollore’s brought to his family’s business.

Merkel Seeks Mandate to Top Thatcher as Third-Term Risks Loom
Merkel, 59, has already made history as Germany’s first
woman chancellor
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is headed toward risky territory as she completes her second term.
Neither Margaret Thatcher nor Tony Blair made it through their third term.
Even Helmut Kohl, the chancellor who presided over German reunification, overcame a party revolt before winning a third and fourth term.
Following elections in two days, Merkel, who polls show is Germany’s most popular politician, faces the perils of a third Greek bailout and the potential breakdown in her 550 billion-euro ($745 billion) energy overhaul.
There’s also the inevitable succession fight and sniping over her legacy.

An estimated one in seven Americans receive food stamps.

US lawmakers have narrowly voted to cut food stamp benefits from next
year despite a veto threat from the White House and opposition from
lobby groups.
The Republican-led House of Representatives passed the bill by 217-200. But it has little chance in the Democratic-held Senate.
The bill would save $39bn (£24bn) over a decade, but affect four million people on the programme.
It comes a day after census data showed 15% of Americans live in poverty.
